After Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1754–1806), Takashima Ohisa, Mid-20th Century Japanese Woodblock Reprint circa: 1950. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Japanese color woodblock print after Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese, ca. 1754–1806) depicting Takashima Ohisa, one of the celebrated beauties of late 18th-century Edo. Ohisa is portrayed holding a round uchiwa fan decorated with the triple oak-leaf crest of her familys Takashima teahouse. The composition is distinguished by Utamaro's elegant treatment of the female figure, elaborate coiffure, delicate facial features, patterned garments, and restrained color palette. The original design dates to approximately 1792–93. The British Museum identifies the composition as a portrait of Ohisa of the Takashima teashop, published by Tsutaya Juzaburo, while the Edo-Tokyo Museum dates the design to 1793. This example appears to be a later Japanese woodblock reprint from recut blocks, likely first half to mid-20th century, rather than an Edo-period lifetime impression. Comparable recarved editions of this composition are documented from the first half of the 20th century. Presented under glazing with black fabric matting in a black frame. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning and scattered minor spotting/discoloration to the sheet. Not examined out of frame. Frame and mat exhibit wear consistent with age. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report.
