After Kitagawa Utamaro (1753/54–1806), Naniwa Okita Admiring Herself in a Mirror, Japanese Woodblock Reprint. Circa 1950. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Japanese color woodblock print after the celebrated Edo-period design by Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese, ca. 1754–1806), Naniwa Okita Admiring Herself in a Mirror, from the series Seven Women Applying Makeup Using a Mirror (Sugatami Shichinin Kesho). The original composition dates to circa 1790–95 and depicts the celebrated teahouse beauty Naniwa Okita seated before a mirror while another woman attends to her coiffure. Utamaro was among the foremost masters of ukiyo-e and was particularly celebrated for his elegant bijin-ga, or images of beautiful women. This example appears to be a later Japanese woodblock reprint after the original Edo-period design, likely 20th century. It retains the characteristic delicate line work, restrained palette and dramatic use of the large circular mirror that distinguish Utamaro's composition. Artist signature and series title appear within the image. Presented under glazing in a black frame and fabric-covered mat. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Condition: Good overall condition with toning and scattered minor discoloration/foxing visible to the paper; minor wear to frame. Not examined out of frame. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report.
