After Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1754–1806), Mother Nursing Child, Mid-20th Century Japanese Woodblock Reprint. Circa 1950. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Japanese color woodblock print after Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese, ca. 1754–1806) depicting an intimate domestic scene of a mother nursing her infant. The child, dressed in a patterned blue-green garment, rests upon the mother's lap as she bends toward him, creating a tender composition characteristic of Utamaros celebrated depictions of motherhood and everyday life. Utamaro produced numerous mother-and-child subjects during the 1790s and early 1800s; museum collections document several closely related nursing compositions from this period. The print bears the Utamaro signature within the image. As with the preceding works from this collection, this example appears to be a later Japanese woodblock reprint from recut blocks, likely mid-20th century, rather than an Edo-period lifetime impression. The approximately 14 x 10-inch format is consistent with the traditional oban format used for Utamaro's original figure prints; for comparison, the Metropolitan Museum's circa-1793 Woman and Child measures 14? x 10 inches. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, fading and scattered minor spotting/discoloration visible to the sheet. Not examined out of frame. Frame and mat exhibit wear consistent with age. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report.
