Andy Warhol (American, 1928–1987), Cow, 1966 — Screenprint on Wallpaper. An iconic work from Andy Warhol’s celebrated Pop Art period, Cow transforms an ordinary pastoral subject into an electrifying image through the artist’s unmistakable combination of commercial printing techniques and high-impact color. A Jersey cow appears in brilliant fluorescent pink against a vivid yellow ground, its photographic source image reduced to bold black halftone patterning and saturated color. Warhol created Cow in 1966 after art dealer Ivan Karp reportedly suggested that he make something pastoral. Rather than approaching the subject conventionally, Warhol enlarged the cow to monumental scale and converted it into wallpaper. Sheets of the image were installed repeatedly across the walls of the Leo Castelli Gallery for Warhol's 1966 exhibition, making the work simultaneously fine art, decoration, and mass-produced commodity. The Museum of Modern Art identifies the 1966 Cow as a screenprint printed by Bill Miller's Wallpaper Studio, Inc., New York, and published by Andy Warhol. MoMA's example measures approximately 45 15/16 x 30 1/16 inches. The work is catalogued as Feldman & Schellmann II.11 and was issued in an unlimited edition; auction records note that 100 examples were stamp-signed. This example retains the narrow unprinted margins with the red TRIM indications and Andy Warhol printed along the margin. Based on the photographs and dimensions, it appears consistent with an example of the 1966 Cow wallpaper, though the auction house does not independently authenticate works and prospective bidders should rely upon their own examination and research. Sheet Size: 44 x 29.75 inches Age: 1966 Condition: Overall good vintage condition considering the approximately 60-year age and inherently fragile wallpaper support. The sheet exhibits expected handling and age-related characteristics, including slight waviness/curling, scattered minor creasing, light surface marks and soiling, and some toning/discoloration, particularly to the unprinted margins. The fluorescent pink and yellow colors remain notably strong and visually striking. The sheet appears to have been trimmed in height compared with commonly recorded full-sheet examples. Unframed. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report. Provenance: From the private estate of a decades-long collector who resided in Paris and New York. His family is now liquidating a portion of the collection.
