After Kitagawa Utamaro (1753/54–1806), Japanese Beauty, Fuzoku Hakkei, Mid-20th Century Woodblock Reprint. Circa 1950. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Japanese color woodblock print after Kitagawa Utamaro (Japanese, ca. 1754–1806), one of the most celebrated masters of Edo-period ukiyo-e. From the series Fuzoku Hakkei (Eight Views of Customs), the composition presents an elegant young woman in a contemplative pose, her dramatically arranged coiffure and elongated features rendered in the refined bijin-ga style for which Utamaro became renowned. The sheet bears the series inscription at upper left and Utamaro signature with publisher mark within the image. This example appears to be a later Japanese woodblock reprint after the original Edo-period design, likely mid-20th century, rather than an original lifetime impression. The restrained palette, fine linear detail and extensive use of black retain the elegant graphic quality of the original composition. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, scattered minor spotting and discoloration visible to the sheet. Not examined out of frame. Frame and mat exhibit minor wear consistent with age. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report.
