After Eishosai Choki (active ca. 1781–1813), Woman and Servant in Snow, Mid-20th Century Japanese Woodblock Reprint. Circa 1950. Sight: 14 x 10 in. Frame: 24 x 19 in. Japanese color woodblock print after Eishosai Choki, an important ukiyo-e artist best known for his elegant depictions of women during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The composition, generally known as Woman and Servant in Snow or Beauty and Manservant in the Snow, depicts an elegantly dressed young woman sheltering beneath a boldly striped umbrella while a male attendant crouches below, apparently removing accumulated snow from her footwear. Japanese museum records identify the figures traditionally as the poet Shushiki and her father. The original design was published by Tsutaya Juzaburo circa 1790 and is particularly admired for its dramatic winter composition and the use of a mica ground in early impressions. An original example measures approximately 14½ x 10 inches. This example appears to be a later Japanese woodblock reprint from recut blocks, likely mid-20th century, rather than an Edo-period impression. Later Showa-period hand-carved and hand-printed woodblock editions of this exact composition are documented. The muted green, ochre, black and orange palette gives the image a particularly attractive period appearance. Presented under glazing with black fabric matting in a black frame. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, fading and scattered minor spotting/discoloration. Some visible surface irregularities, particularly in the upper background. Not examined out of frame. Frame and mat exhibit wear consistent with age. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report.
