Norman Rockwell (American, 1894–1978), Victorian Woman at a Bookseller’s Window, Artists Proof Lithograph hand signed in pencil. Sight: 20 x 15 in. Frame: 31 x 26 in. Limited-edition lithograph by celebrated American illustrator Norman Rockwell (1894–1978), depicting an elegantly dressed Victorian woman pausing before the bow window of a bookseller and newsstand. The finely rendered black-and-white composition is rich in period detail, from the woman's feathered hat and striped skirt to the books, newspapers and watchful shopkeeper behind the window. Rockwell's characteristic narrative quality and attention to everyday human observation are especially evident in the interaction between the two figures. Hand signed in pencil Norman Rockwell at lower right and inscribed A/P in pencil at lower left, denoting an Artist’s Proof. This is significant: the Norman Rockwell Museum explains that Rockwell's authorized limited-edition prints were individually hand signed, and that artist's proofs constituted a smaller portion of the edition. The museum notes that Rockwell limited editions were commonly produced as lithographs or collotypes. Presented under glazing with a wide linen mat, gilt fillet and handsome architectural-style black and gilt frame. Condition: Very good overall condition. Print appears clean and well preserved under glass with only minor age-related surface characteristics visible. Frame exhibits scattered minor rubbing and small areas of finish loss consistent with age and handling. Not examined out of frame. Please be sure and view all photos. This auction house considers the photos as the condition report.
