A collection of issues of The Etude: For the Teacher, Student and Lover of Music, a monthly musical periodical published by Theodore Presser at 1712 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. The items present include front covers dated July 1905 and internal pages dated December 1905. These large-format softcover magazines are bound in their original illustrated paper wrappers. The cover features a prominent Art Nouveau illustration of a youth playing a flute in a sylvan setting with decorative foliate borders. Content includes pedagogical articles, music history, news, and several pages of printed sheet music for various instruments, including works by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Saint-Saens. Numerous period advertisements are present throughout the magazines, featuring full-page back cover advertisements for Knabe Pianos, Walter Baker and Co. Chocolate and Cocoa, Mennen’s Toilet Powder, and Ivers and Pond Pianos. Height approx. 13.75 inches (measured against a ruler). Condition: The magazines show general wear consistent with age and the fragile nature of period wood-pulp paper. Visible condition issues include significant overall toning and browning of the paper, minor foxing, edge fraying, and small tears to the delicate wrappers and margins. Staples may show oxidation typical for the period.
