An assortment of early 20th-century issues of The Etude, a monthly music periodical published in Philadelphia, PA. The collection includes issues from 1805, specifically January (Volume 23, Number 1, designated as a Chopin Number), February, May, and June. Each issue features a large-format softcover with illustrative designs characteristic of the period. The January cover depicts a musician in Renaissance attire playing a lute; the May cover features classical figures with a harp and flute beside a tiger; the February and June issues are decorated with elaborate Art Nouveau style borders. The back covers are printed with period advertisements for manufacturers such as Knabe Pianos, Ivers & Pond Pianos, Vose Pianos, Walter Baker & Co.s Chocolate and Cocoa, and Mennen’s Borated Talcum Toilet Powder. Dimensions: H approx. 34.9 cm. Condition: The magazines are in fair to poor condition. The paper is brittle and shows significant age-toning and foxing. Observable defects include extensive chipping and large tears with paper loss along the margins and corners of the covers. The spines exhibit heavy wear and deterioration.
