National washboard with a ribbed glass scrubbing panel set in a wood frame, the standard American laundry board of the early to mid 1900s. The glass panel is embossed with the word NATIONAL repeated down the ribs, and the wood splash panel above it is stenciled in red with NATIONAL and a model number that is now only partly readable. The National Washboard Company of Chicago was the largest maker in the trade, and its glass-front boards, sold at the time as sanitary and non-rusting, are the ones most often kept today as farmhouse and laundry room decor. The board stands about 24 inches tall and roughly 10 inches wide. The wood is dry and gray with open splits, a chipped area at the upper right corner of the top panel, exposed nail heads, and general weather staining. The glass panel is fully intact with no cracks or chips and the ribs are still sharp. Condition is good for its age. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
