Autographed 1990 TV Sports Mailbag #36 Luke Appling MLB Hall Of Fame Induction 8X10 Stat Sheet (Limited Edition). A limited edition commemorative piece honoring one of the greatest players in Chicago White Sox history and one of the premier shortstops of his generation. Appling spent his entire 20 season Major League career with the Chicago White Sox from 1930 through 1950, with his playing career interrupted by military service during World War II, and finished with 2,749 hits, 440 doubles, 1,116 RBI, 1,319 runs and a superb .310 lifetime batting average. Famous for his exceptional bat control, ability to foul off pitches and remarkable command of the strike zone, Appling captured two American League batting championships, including a spectacular .388 average in 1936, which remains one of the highest single season marks ever recorded by a shortstop. He was selected to seven All Star Games and twice finished as high as second in American League MVP voting, establishing himself as one of the most complete infielders of his era. Appling remained closely connected to baseball long after his playing days as a coach and minor league manager, and at the legendary 1982 Cracker Jack Old Timers Baseball Classic, the 75 year old Appling delighted fans by blasting a home run off fellow Hall of Famer Warren Spahn, one of the most memorable moments in old timers baseball history. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964, and his iconic No. 4 was later retired by the Chicago White Sox. Appling passed away in 1991 at the age of 83, only a short time after this TV Sports Mailbag piece was issued, permanently limiting the supply of authentic material signed during his lifetime.
