He finished his career with 2,449 hits, 427 doubles, 773 RBI and a .289 lifetime batting average, earned 10 All Star selections, and led the National League with 200 hits in 1957. Schoendienst was a member of the Cardinals' 1946 World Series championship team and later helped the Milwaukee Braves capture the 1957 World Series, giving him championships with two of the National League's most storied franchises. His impact on baseball extended far beyond his playing days, however, as Schoendienst became manager of the Cardinals and guided the club to the 1967 World Series championship over the Boston Red Sox and another National League pennant in 1968. Through his years as a player, coach, manager and special assistant, his remarkable association with the Cardinals organization ultimately stretched across seven decades, making him one of the most enduring figures in franchise history. Schoendienst was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 by the Veterans Committee, making this TV Sports Mailbag issue from the very year of his Cooperstown induction particularly meaningful. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 95, permanently limiting the supply of authentic material signed during his lifetime.
