His tremendous popularity in Pittsburgh became so great that the short left field porch at Forbes Field was famously dubbed "Kiner's Korner." Kiner later played for the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians before a back injury brought his playing career to an early conclusion at just 32 years old. His impact on baseball continued for decades after retirement, as he became a beloved broadcaster for the New York Mets beginning with their inaugural 1962 season, with his memorable postgame program also carrying the "Kiner's Korner" name. Kiner was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975 and remained one of baseball's most recognizable personalities until his passing in 2014 at the age of 91.
