A 90 percent silver Washington quarter from the Denver Mint, the D clear on the reverse below the wreath between QUARTER and DOLLAR. The coin is circulated. The high points of the cheek and the hair above the ear are smoothed, with ribbon and curls only partly present, and the reverse eagle shows a flat breast with soft leg and tail feathers. Medium grey with darker grey in the recesses, a warm brown tint under the lighting of the first photograph, and a small dark spot at the eagle's left wing tip. Rims complete, no corrosion, no signs of cleaning. The coin holds 0.1808 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $11.95 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. Sculptor John Flanagan modeled the portrait on the 1785 life bust of Washington by Jean Antoine Houdon, taken from a plaster cast of Washington's own face, which is why the profile looks like a man and not an idealized figure.
