A 90 percent silver Morgan dollar from the San Francisco Mint, with a sharp S below the wreath bow above ONE DOLLAR. The coin looks about uncirculated. A faint high point rub shows on the cheek, the hair above the ear and the eagle's breast, but the strike is otherwise full with complete leg and breast feathering. Bright silver-white with light golden-tan toning, light contact marks in the field and a few ticks on the cheek. Luster looks original, with no hairline pattern suggesting a cleaning. It holds 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $51 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, so check spot. San Francisco struck only about 2.56 million dollars in 1899, and the Pittman Act of 1918 melted some 270 million silver dollars for wartime bullion, which is much of why later S Morgans are harder to find than their mintages suggest. The coin is graded AU55 by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Estimated Value: $150 to $250. Sold as-is.
