A 90 percent silver Franklin half dollar from Philadelphia. This lot was listed as a 1959-D. It is not. On a Franklin half the mint mark sits above the bell's yoke on the reverse. That spot is sharply focused, brightly lit and empty, and the consignor's own flip says only 1959 with no D on it. It is a Philadelphia coin. The strike is razor sharp, with the hair curls, the bell lettering and the bell crack fully rendered. The fields are deeply mirrored and glassy against frosted devices and the rims look squared, so this may be a proof rather than a business strike. We are not asserting it; a bidder who cares should look in hand, since the two are different listings. Bright untoned white with a few tiny ticks in the left field. It holds 0.3617 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $23.85 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, so check spot. The coin is graded MS65 by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Estimated Value: $25 to $40. Sold as-is.
