A 90 percent silver Washington quarter from Philadelphia. The mint mark spot below the reverse wreath is in focus and empty. It runs from lightly circulated to about uncirculated. The hair curls and ribbon are largely complete with a light rub on the cheek, and the eagle's breast is slightly flat while the leg feathers are complete. Grey-white under warm golden-brown obverse toning, with a few dark specks near the eagle's right wing. No corrosion, no sign of cleaning. The coin holds 0.1808 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $11.95 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, so check spot before you bid. The Coinage Act of 1965 took silver out of the quarter because bullion had climbed past the point where a quarter was worth more as metal than as money, and silver vanished from change within a few years. The flip is marked BU by the consignor, which looks slightly generous here. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion.
