A 90 percent silver Barber half dollar from Philadelphia. The mint mark spot below the eagle's tail is in focus and empty. It is well circulated. LIBERTY on the headband is worn away except for faint traces, the ear and hair above the forehead are flat, and the wreath leaves have merged. The reverse eagle has a flat breast with only part of the shield lines present. Surfaces are an even natural grey, darker in the protected areas, with a few toning specks on the cheek and jaw. Rims are full, no scratches or dings, no brightness suggesting a cleaning. It holds 0.3617 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $23.85 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, so check spot before you bid. Charles Barber put LIBERTY on the headband as a wear gauge, and how much of that word survives is still the first thing a grader looks at. The coin is graded VG by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Estimated Value: $25 to $40. Sold as-is.
