A 90 percent silver Morgan dollar dated 1900 with a clear S mint mark on the reverse below the wreath bow, so this is a San Francisco strike. The coin is lightly circulated with a lot of luster left. Friction shows on the hair above the ear and on the cheek and the eagle's breast feathers are lightly worn, but hair detail over the ear is otherwise good and LIBERTY is bold. Both sides carry numerous fine hairlines and scattered contact and bag marks, heaviest in the obverse fields and on the cheek; these read as normal circulation and bag handling rather than a cleaning. Surfaces are light gray-white with faint tan toning at the rims. It is graded AU53 by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. San Francisco struck far fewer 1900 dollars than Philadelphia did, so lightly worn survivors are scarcer than the mintage suggests. Silver runs about $51 near $66 an ounce.
