A 90 percent silver Walking Liberty half dated 1942, and the catalog title needed fixing. A mint mark letter is plainly present on the reverse at the lower left below the pine branch, the correct spot for 1917 through 1947, so this is not a plain Philadelphia coin. The letter reads as an S and the consignor's flip reads 42 S AU, but it is small and soft in the photograph and should be confirmed in hand. The coin is bright white and lustrous both sides with sharp centers, full gown lines and sun rays. Now the honest part: the fields are reflective and carry scattered fine hairlines, with a few contact marks on the cheek and leg. Surfaces show hairlines consistent with an old cleaning or dip, and PCGS or NGC would likely return a coin like this as details rather than a straight grade. It is graded AU by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Silver runs about $23.85 near $66 an ounce. Estimated Value: $25 to $35. Sold as-is.
