A 90 percent silver Standing Liberty quarter, 1917 San Francisco, and the photographs settle the type question the catalog title left open. No stars sit below the reverse eagle and Liberty's right breast is uncovered, so this is a Type I. That matters, because 1917-S Type I and 1917-S Type II are separately struck and separately valued coins. The S mint mark is clear on the obverse pedestal just left of the date, and the M to the right of the date is the designer's monogram, not a second mint mark. All four date digits are bold. Gown drapery lines are readable, the head is worn but the profile survives, and LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRVST are both full. Toning is light gray with darker gray-brown in the protected areas and a little grit at the left obverse rim. It is graded Vf by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Silver runs about $11.95 near $66 an ounce. Estimated Value: $85 to $140. Sold as-is.
