A Shield Nickel of the no rays type, struck in copper-nickel. The obverse shows the Union shield with the cross above and branches at the sides; the reverse carries the large 5 ringed by thirteen stars with no rays between them, placing it in the 1867 to 1883 run. The date is the problem. The first three digits read 188 clearly, but the fourth is a soft raised blob. It is as wide as the neighboring eights, so it is not a one; it could be a two, a three or an eight. The flip is written as 1882, but the last digit there sits over a heavy ink blot and looks corrected, so we cannot confirm the date and price this as a common circulated Shield Nickel. It is graded FINE by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Shield outline, stripes and bar are complete, branch leaves are worn to outlines, and fields are medium gray with the granular look normal for the type. There is no silver in this coin.
