A 90 percent silver Standing Liberty quarter dated 1917, and the photographs confirm the Type I design. Type I means Liberty's right breast is uncovered and the reverse eagle has no stars beneath it. MacNeil's design was changed inside its first year: partway through 1917 the Mint covered Liberty in mail and moved three stars below the eagle, making 1917 the only date struck in both types. The pedestal left of the date is in focus and empty, so this is a Philadelphia coin; the M right of the date is the designer's monogram, not a mint mark. Detail is even, with full LIBERTY, full IN GOD WE TRVST, softened gown lines and a worn head. No rim damage or scratches. It is graded Vf by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion, and the wear looks nearer Fine to us. The date sits on a raised pedestal that takes the first wear, which is why so many of these end up dateless. Silver runs about $11.95 near $66 an ounce. Estimated Value: $70 to $110. Sold as-is.
