A 90 percent silver Morgan dollar dated 1897, struck at Philadelphia. The reverse area below the wreath bow is sharp, clean and empty under magnification, so there is no mint mark. The coin is bright and fully lustrous with a frosty to semi-prooflike look, full hair detail over the ear, complete cotton bolls and a bold LIBERTY on the headband. The reverse eagle shows full breast feathers and a complete wreath. A few very light hairlines and a couple of tiny ticks sit in the left obverse field. There is no toning, rim damage or corrosion, and to our eye it presents as uncirculated. The consignor has written MS65 on the cardboard flip. We pass that along, and bidders should weigh it correctly: the coin is graded MS65 by the consignor, it is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Raw dollars offered as MS65 often certify lower. The coin holds 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $51 near $66 an ounce. Estimated Value: $55 to $80. Sold as-is.
