A small copper-nickel cent, 88 percent copper and 12 percent nickel, from the short 1856 to 1858 Flying Eagle run that retired the big copper cents. All four date digits are sharp below the eagle. Wear is light and even. The eagle's breast and wing tips are flattened but feather detail survives across most of the wing, and the reverse wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco is fully detailed with only a high point rub. Color is medium chocolate-tan with olive and gold toning and a few darker spots at the eagle's tail and the right side of the wreath. No corrosion, the rim is unbroken, and one short hairline crosses the field at the eagle's beak. The flip also says Large Letters. That variety is decided by whether the A and M of AMERICA touch, and the photographs do not resolve the lettering well enough to judge, so we claim no variety. The coin is graded Au+ by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. Estimated Value: $25 to $50. Sold as-is.
