A 1965 Kennedy half dollar in 40 percent silver. The date is clear and there is no mint mark, which is correct: the Mint left mint marks off every US coin from 1965 through 1967 to discourage hoarding during the coin shortage. The coin looks uncirculated or very close, with full hair detail above the ear and sharp eagle feathers. Heavy golden tan and russet toning covers both sides, deepest at the rims, with luster still showing through in the fields. A few small dark specks sit in the hair above the forehead and one on the cheek. No wear break, scratches or corrosion. This is silver clad, not solid silver: outer layers of 80 percent silver over a low silver core, netting 0.1479 troy ounce of pure silver, roughly $9.75 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. The Coinage Act of 1965 pulled silver out of the dime and quarter entirely but kept it in the half, a compromise that lasted through 1970. Estimated Value: $10 to $14. Sold as-is.
