An Indian Head cent with a heavy corrosion problem and a date that cannot be fully read. The first three digits read 1, 8 and 8; the fourth digit is buried under corrosion and shadow in every photograph, so the 1883 date on the consignment sheet cannot be confirmed from the images and bidders should treat the exact date as unknown. The reverse is covered in bright blue green and teal verdigris across the wreath, shield and fields, with orange red copper showing where the crust has flaked, and ONE CENT is partly eaten into. The obverse is dark chocolate to black, worn and pitted, the legend only partly readable, and the surfaces are porous rather than smooth. The green looks active, so keep this one dry and away from other coins. Copper carries no melt value. Worth knowing: the Indian Head cent ran from 1859 to 1909, and James Longacre modeled the headdress on a classical Liberty figure rather than on a Native American sitter. Estimated Value: $2 to $5.
