A sterling silver threepence of George V from the British Royal Mint. The obverse shows the King's bare head facing left; the reverse carries a crowned numeral 3 in oak sprays with the date split, 19 left and 17 right, and both halves read clearly. This type carries no mint mark. The coin is heavily circulated, the portrait worn nearly flat across the cheek, ear and hair and the crown soft, though the numeral, date and wreath are complete. Surfaces are dark charcoal with black grime in the recesses and several black specks near the obverse rim. No luster remains and there is no rim damage. At 92.5 percent silver the coin holds only about a twenty-fourth of a troy ounce of silver, roughly $2.75 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. Britain dropped sterling for 50 percent silver in 1920 after the First World War drained its reserves, so 1917 falls in the last years of true sterling coinage. Estimated Value: $4 to $8. Sold as-is.
