"Bertha Kinale" Walpi Figural Pottery Trinket Tray

Signed Hopi pottery trinket tray by Bertha Kinale of Walpi Village, Polacca, Arizona, featuring an unusual sculptural figural form with a shallow teardrop-shaped dish and modeled head at the top. The warm reddish clay body is decorated with bold black hand-painted geometric, spiral, linear and abstract motifs characteristic of Southwestern Pueblo pottery traditions. The reverse is hand inscribed “B Kinale / Walpi Village / Polacca / AZ,” identifying the maker and origin. Walpi is a historic Hopi village located on First Mesa, and pottery associated with the Polacca and First Mesa tradition is highly collectible for its distinctive forms and hand-painted decoration.
