Vintage Tohono O’odham Starburst Coiled Basket

Traditional Native American handwoven coiled basketry tray, attributed to the Tohono O’odham or Akimel O’odham (Pima) peoples of Southern Arizona. Measuring approximately 10.25" in diameter x 3" tall, this substantial shallow basket features tightly worked concentric coils accented by a radiating geometric design in natural cream and rich brown tones. The basket is constructed using traditional Southwestern coiled basketry techniques and natural desert plant fibers. The contrasting darker elements create a repeating geometric or starburst-like pattern that radiates outward from the tightly woven center, giving the piece a striking graphic quality. This style of Arizona Native American basketry is closely associated with generations of O’odham basket makers and the use of locally gathered plant materials.
