Handwoven Navajo (Diné) pictorial textile by Ellen Yazzie, measuring approximately 19" x 20". This detailed weaving depicts a Southwestern landscape and community scene with hogans and other structures, figures, animals, fencing, mesas and distant snow-capped mountains, all framed by a bold stepped geometric border. The original Museum of Northern Arizona Navajo Craftsman Exhibition tag remains attached and identifies the weaver as Ellen Yazzie, the place as Many Farms, and the article as “Pictorial.” The tag is numbered W207 and shows a handwritten price of $78.00. The presence of this exhibition tag provides particularly desirable documentation and provenance for the textile. Ellen Yazzie is a documented Diné weaver whose pictorial Navajo weavings have appeared on the secondary and auction market. A larger pictorial weaving attributed to Ellen Yazzie was previously offered by Cowan’s with a $2,000–$3,000 estimate, while another elaborate example has been offered by a specialist Native American art dealer for substantially more. This smaller Navajo pictorial rug / weaving is an appealing example of Southwestern Indigenous textile art, combining figurative storytelling with traditional Navajo weaving techniques. The muted palette of charcoal, gray, lavender, rust, tan, cream and earth tones gives the piece an especially attractive vintage appearance. Preowned vintage condition with age-related wear and some loose/protruding fibers visible around the edges. Original Museum of Northern Arizona exhibition tag is included and attached. Please review photos carefully for details and condition.
