Small vintage Hopi-Tewa pottery jar, measuring approximately 3.5" tall x 2.75" wide. The vessel has a rounded body rising into a tall, slightly flared cylindrical neck and is finished in a warm reddish-orange/buff surface with bold black painted decoration. The body features a repeating abstract geometric design composed of sweeping triangular forms and stepped elements, bordered at the shoulder by horizontal black bands. The combination of the vessel form, polished surface, and black geometric decoration is consistent with 20th-century Hopi/Hopi-Tewa pottery traditions. Hopi artists produced black-on-red as well as black-on-buff pottery, and comparable small jars were made by numerous potters working at First Mesa and Tewa Village. The underside shows faint remnants of a handwritten maker's inscription or signature, but it has been substantially worn away and is no longer confidently legible. This is especially important with older Hopi pottery, as documented examples exist where original signatures have become nearly obliterated through wear. Vintage condition with age-related surface wear, including scratches, abrasions, small areas of pigment loss and substantial wear to the underside. No artist attribution is being made beyond the Hopi/Hopi-Tewa identification. Please review all photos for condition and the remaining underside markings. Measures approximately 3.5" tall x 2.75" wide.
