Vintage hand-built Hopi polychrome pottery bowl by noted Hopi potter Juanita Healing (1916–2006). The underside is clearly hand-signed “Juanita Healing,” providing direct artist attribution. Healing was a Hopi potter from Sichomovi at First Mesa and the sister of potter Patricia Honie. She married Dewey Healing, the son of Annie Healing Nampeyo and grandson of celebrated Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo. Adobe Gallery describes Healing as an exceptional artisan in both vessel construction and decoration. The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian also documents Juanita Healing as a Hopi Pueblo artist, including her work acquired by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board in 1977. This low, rounded bowl displays a warm reddish-orange ground decorated with bold black geometric and linear motifs encircling the vessel. The design incorporates sweeping triangular forms, parallel fine lines and textured painted areas, creating a strong graphic composition characteristic of Healing's work. A comparable Healing jar documented by Adobe Gallery measures 3?" x 5¾", remarkably similar in scale to this example, and is noted for both its painted decoration and firing coloration. The bowl was purchased in the early 1980s and has remained in the consignor's collection. It shows age-appropriate surface wear, including scattered scratches, rubbing, minor pigment loss and small surface imperfections. The signature area on the underside also shows wear, but “Juanita Healing” remains readily legible. Please review all photographs carefully for condition.
