Small Hopi pottery bowl measuring approximately 2" tall x 3" wide, hand formed and decorated with black geometric and abstract avian-inspired imagery over a warm orange clay surface. The sweeping curved forms, feather-like elements, textured painted areas and horizontal framing lines are characteristic of the Sikyatki Revival tradition associated with Hopi pottery. Abstract bird imagery and similar framing-line conventions are well documented within this tradition. Of particular interest is the provenance accompanying the piece. Inside the bowl is an older newspaper clipping identifying Territorial Indian Arts & Crafts of Old Town Scottsdale, operated by Deborah and Alston Neal. Territorial Indian Arts remains a longtime specialist in historic and contemporary Pueblo pottery, including Hopi pottery and works from the Nampeyo family. The clipping has a handwritten notation of “8-1-15,” though this appears to relate to the clipping rather than the manufacture of the pottery. The underside shows evidence of an old label or adhesive having been removed, but no legible artist signature is presently visible. Because of that, I would catalogue this as Hopi, artist unknown, rather than attempting to attribute it to a specific potter. The bowl shows noticeable age-related wear to the painted decoration, including rubbing and losses to portions of the black pigment, along with minor surface scratches, scuffs and natural irregularities. No major breakage is visible in the provided photographs. See photos for complete condition and details.
