Vintage Tohono O’odham Coiled Basket Bowl

Vintage Southwestern Native American hand-coiled basket bowl, likely of Tohono O’odham (historically called Papago) or Akimel O’odham (Pima) origin. The basket is constructed in the traditional coiled style with a natural cream-colored foundation and contrasting dark and reddish-brown geometric elements worked into the weave. The interior and exterior feature repeating geometric designs arranged around the bowl, with dark accents consistent with devil’s claw traditionally used in southern Arizona basketry. Particularly attractive is the finished rim, which incorporates contrasting dark and reddish-brown fibers in a decorative crisscross pattern. The tightly worked concentric coils, natural plant fibers and bold geometric decoration are characteristic of Arizona Indigenous basketry and Southwestern Native American woven baskets. This vintage Tohono O’odham basket, Pima basket, coiled Native American basket, devil’s claw basket, Southwestern Indian basket and Arizona tribal basketry would make a beautiful addition to a collection of Native American art, ethnographic textiles, Southwestern décor or traditional handwoven baskets. Preowned vintage condition with age-related wear to the natural fibers, including some loose, broken or protruding fibers and variation in the weave.
