Hopi "Polacca" Bird Effigy Pottery Bowl

Wonderful Hopi bird effigy pottery bowl from Polacca, Arizona, measuring approximately 5.5" long x 4" wide. This handmade Native American pottery piece is formed as a stylized bird with a raised head, rounded open bowl forming the body, and an extended tail. The warm reddish-orange clay surface is decorated with hand-painted black geometric motifs, including linear, triangular, stippled and abstract elements reminiscent of traditional Hopi pottery designs. The underside bears a handwritten “Polacca, Az.” inscription along with additional partially worn writing and markings. The distinctive bird form makes this an especially appealing example of Hopi figural pottery and Southwestern Native American ceramic art. Bird and animal effigy vessels have long been collected alongside traditional Hopi bowls, jars and polychrome pottery, and this piece combines a functional bowl form with sculptural folk-art character.
