Bob White Archie “Sculpture Vultures” Original Art

Bob White Archie "Sculpture Vultures!" Original Comic Art – Archie Betty Jughead Veronica Moose Original vintage Archie Comics production artwork attributed to longtime Archie artist Bob White, titled “Sculpture Vultures!” and originating from material recovered from the Bob White storage collection. This large-format page features an outstanding assortment of Riverdale characters, with individual panels devoted to Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge and Moose Mason. The introductory panel reads, “Archie and the gang demonstrate there’s more than one way to carve a piece of stone in ‘Sculpture Vultures!’” Each vignette presents a different humorous interpretation of sculpture: Archie is literally being held aloft as a human sculpture; Jughead sleeps suspended between two trees; Betty works on multiple busts; Veronica directs Smithers as he chisels a sculpture; and Moose works on a large portrait bust. The page is particularly interesting from a comic-production standpoint. It survives in a partially finished state, combining original graphite pencil artwork with finished inked panel borders, lettering, character headers and portions of finished artwork. Visible editorial/production markings, corrections and paste-up elements further demonstrate the working process behind the page. Research has thus far not identified a published appearance of this particular Bob White “Sculpture Vultures!” page. A later Archie story titled “The Sculpture Vultures” is documented from 1997, but it is an unrelated Betty story by a different creative team. Accordingly, this earlier Bob White piece is conservatively offered as possibly unpublished original Archie Comics artwork. A particularly appealing Bob White example due to the five major Archie characters represented on a single page, unusual sculpture theme, large introductory title treatment, and unfinished production state that exposes White’s original pencil work. Provenance: From material originating from the Bob White storage collection. Artwork exhibits expected signs of age and production use, including toning, staining/foxing, handling wear, editorial markings, paste-up/adhesive remnants and other imperfections visible in the photographs.
