This oil painting on canvas depicts an intimate maternal genre scene. The work shows a woman in traditional regional dress, including a white coif and a green apron, seated on a wooden floor beside a glowing hearth. She holds an infant in her arms, with a black cooking pot visible on the fire and a simple wooden chair in the background. The style is characteristic of French realist genre painting from the early 20th century, using a warm, tonal palette with impasto highlights to define the firelight and figures. The lower right corner is signed and dated J. M. GUINIER 1914 (French). The painting is housed in an ornate, gilded gesso-over-wood frame in the rococo style, featuring elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs at the corners. Dimensions (frame): approx. H 54.6 cm x W 62.9 cm (Measured against a visible tape measure). Condition: The canvas shows fine craquelure and accumulated surface dirt. There is a prominent vertical scratch with associated paint loss in the upper left quadrant. The frame exhibits significant condition issues, including large losses to the gesso ornamentation at the corners and along the edges, numerous cracks in the moulding, and worn gilding. The reverse of the frame has been reinforced with green adhesive tape.
