This late 19th-century hand-coloured wood engraving, titled Government House, From Skating Pond, depicts a winter scene at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Canada. The composition features groups of figures in Victorian winter attire skating on a frozen pond, set against a backdrop of snow-covered trees and gabled architecture. The print is inscribed Schell and Hogan to the lower left and F. S. King Sc. to the lower right, identifying the illustrators Frederic B. Schell and John A. Hogan and the wood engraver Francis Scott King. This work was originally produced as an illustration for Picturesque Canada, published circa 1882. The print lacks plate marks, which is characteristic of the wood engraving technique, and features fine hand-applied colour. It is presented in a double mat and a silvered decorative frame with a beaded border. The reverse bears a stamp from Trypillia Arts, Toronto, and a certificate of authenticity label. Dimensions measured from visible tape measure (outer frame): approx. H 13.5 inches x W 16.5 inches. Condition: The print displays light, uniform toning consistent with age, but is free from visible foxing, tears, or staining. The hand-applied colour remains even and clear. The double mat and silvered frame are in good overall condition with only minor surface wear and small scuffs to the frame edges.
