British School, 19th Century, Mountainous Coastal Landscape with Stone Cottages and Engine House. A nineteenth-century British School watercolour on paper depicting a rugged mountainous landscape. The composition features a cluster of stone cottages and a prominent tall chimneyed structure, possibly an industrial engine house or mill, situated on a rocky shoreline. A calm body of water in the foreground reflects the buildings. The scene includes several small figures and a sailing vessel with a red sail in the distance. The work is rendered in a traditional topographical style using soft washes and fine detailing. It is presented behind a wide gold-coloured mat in an ornate gilt wood and gesso frame decorated with foliate and scroll motifs. The verso features a wooden panelled backboard with a heavy brass-toned hanging chain and remnants of a brown paper backing. Dimensions: Frame approx. W 27.5 inches x H 20.5 inches (read from visible tape measure). Condition: The watercolour shows significant toning and pronounced mat burn at the peripheries where the image meets the mount. There is some minor foxing present throughout the sky and landscape. The gold-coloured mat displays surface discolouration. The gilt frame has small losses to the gesso and wear to the gilded finish, particularly at the edges and corners. The paper backing on the reverse is heavily deteriorated and torn.
