English School, 19th Century, Rural Landscape with Figures and Thatch Cottage, Watercolour on paper depicting a rural landscape scene. The composition is centred on a timber-framed cottage with a thatched roof and brick chimneys, set amidst mature trees. To the right of the cottage, a figure on a white horse is shown in conversation with a standing pedestrian. In the foreground, three children are seated together on a fallen log. The work is housed within a multi-line wash mount and a gilded wooden frame with a stepped profile. The reverse is sealed with a backing board that bears a faint, illegible pencil inscription within a circular mark. Measurements (read from a visible tape measure): Frame: approx. H 31.1 cm x W 36.2 cm Sight size: approx. H 17.1 cm x W 24.1 cm. Condition: The paper shows visible toning and scattered foxing throughout, especially in the sky. There is a prominent line of mat burn around the edges of the watercolour. The mount exhibits age-related foxing and light stains. The gilded frame has various small chips and losses to the gilding, particularly at the corners. No evidence of restoration is apparent.
