An oil painting on wood panel by J. Marshall (Late 19th/Early 20th Century), Loch Aine, depicting a tranquil Scottish highland landscape titled Loch Aine. The composition features a loch in the foreground with four birds in flight, set against a backdrop of dense trees and a prominent mountain peak. The work is executed in a realist style, employing textured impasto to define the light-catching ridges of the mountain and foliage, while the water and sky are rendered with smoother brushwork. The painting is inscribed Loch AINE in the lower left corner and signed J. Marshall in the lower right. It is housed in a substantial, ornate gilded frame decorated with scrolling foliate, shell, and diaper-pattern gesso motifs. The reverse shows the natural wood panel support with a wire hanging mount. Condition: The oil paint surface displays a fine, stable network of craquelure throughout. The ornate gilded gesso frame exhibits several areas of loss, particularly at the corners and along the edges, with some wear to the gilding revealing the underlying plaster. The wood panel support remains stable.
