An oil on canvas landscape painting signed H. Johnston. The work depicts a tranquil woodland interior, dominated by the pale, textured trunks of silver birch trees. The artist has employed a tonalist palette consisting of muted ochres, browns, and greys, effectively capturing the atmosphere of a late autumn or winter day. In the middle distance, a suggestion of a stream or small waterfall is rendered with thick, impasto brushwork. The overall style is impressionistic, with loose and expressive strokes defining the peeling bark of the trees and the forest floor. The work is signed in lowercase script to the lower right corner h johnston. It is housed in a wide, stepped wooden frame with a light-coloured limed finish that highlights the natural grain of the timber. Approx. frame size (measured against a ruler): H 54.5 cm x W 61.5 cm. Condition: The painted surface appears stable with some minor surface dirt and dust. The wooden frame is in good overall condition with negligible wear to the outer edges. The verso is fitted with a backing board which exhibits significant water staining and scattered foxing.
