An evocative 19th-century maritime scene executed in oil on a wooden panel, depicting a dark-hulled shipwreck battered by turbulent waves against a rocky shore. The composition is rendered with energetic brushwork and significant use of impasto, capturing the foam and spray of the sea under a heavy, overcast sky. The work is signed in the lower left corner with the initial A followed by an indistinct name and dated '91. It is presented in a period gilt-finished moulded wooden frame. The reverse of the wooden panel shows the natural grain and is free of further markings. Dimensions: approx. 41.9 cm x 61.6 cm (measured against a visible scale in inches). Condition: The oil surface shows a fine and stable craquelure throughout and carries a layer of surface dirt. The gilt-finished moulded frame exhibits age-related wear, including minor losses to the finish and oxidation spots. The wooden panel reverse remains in good condition with no evidence of warping.
