NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Measuring approximately 40" square, this large vintage Japanese textile panel depicts Kyoto’s celebrated Gion Matsuri festival procession from a stylized bird’s-eye perspective. The image is printed or silk-screened onto a fabric ground with pronounced horizontal ribbing and is mounted within a deep brown to ebony glossy-finished wood frame. The composition follows the procession diagonally through a misty view of historic Kyoto, with groups of attendants surrounding the towering yamahoko festival floats. The elaborate multi-tiered structures feature tall ceremonial spires, roofed platforms and large wooden wheels. Traditional yamahoko are assembled from fitted wooden components secured by elaborate rope lashings rather than nails, allowing the monumental floats to be dismantled and reconstructed for the annual festival. Muted russet, gray, ivory and black tones define the architecture, figures and floats, while broad scalloped cloud forms frame the scene above and below. The strong horizontal texture of the cloth remains visible beneath the printed decoration, distinguishing the work from a conventional paper lithograph or painted canvas. A small vertical panel of Japanese characters appears near the upper left of the composition reads ???, identifying the scene as Kyoto’s Gion Festival. The reverse retains a label reading CUSTOM FRAMED BY THE SNOOP SHOP ~ 910 COSBY STREET ~ CENTREVILLE, MS, dated 1/72, documenting that the textile was custom framed in January 1972 and establishing its presence in Mississippi by that date.
