AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 8-1/2" x 11", this substantial softcover commemorative volume was published in 1974 for the Sesquicentennial of East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. Titled East Feliciana Parish 1824–1974 ~ “Land of Seven Springs and Seven Pastures,” the book contains well over 100 unnumbered pages filled with local histories, biographies, period photographs, community records and sponsored business pages. East Feliciana Parish was created in 1824 when the earlier Feliciana Parish was divided into East and West Feliciana, with Clinton selected as the parish seat. The region forms part of Louisiana’s historic Florida Parishes, an area once governed successively by France, Britain and Spain and briefly associated with the independent Republic of West Florida in 1810. The name Feliciana has traditionally been interpreted as “Happy Land” and linked to Félicité de Gálvez, wife of Spanish governor Bernardo de Gálvez. The volume documents the parish’s six principal communities and includes illustrated sections on Clinton, Jackson, Norwood, Silliman College, the East Feliciana Parish Courthouse, early settlers, churches, schools, plantations, businesses and prominent local families. Jackson was an important early governmental and educational center, while Clinton became the parish seat following the 1824 division. The parish developed through a mixture of small farms and plantation agriculture, with settlement patterns influenced by migrants from Virginia, the Carolinas and other parts of the Upland South. Prepared during the parish’s 150th-anniversary year, the book preserves photographs, family accounts and community histories that may not appear in broader Louisiana references. It is particularly useful to collectors and researchers interested in East Feliciana genealogy, historic architecture, churches, schools, plantations and the development of the Florida Parishes. The volume has also been cited as a historical source in later documentation concerning East Feliciana Parish properties
