AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Standing just over 4" H to the lid finial and measuring 6" in diameter across the cylindrical body, excluding the extended flange around the upper rim, this substantial covered stoneware casserole weighs approximately 2-1/2 pounds. The underside is impressed Paul Anthony, identifying the piece as American studio pottery by Anthony Stoneware. The wheel-thrown body is finished in a rich cobalt or royal-blue glaze, with horizontal throwing lines retained around the exterior. A broad flange projects from the upper border and is embellished with modeled and incised accents through which the warm brown stoneware body remains exposed. The fitted lid repeats the cobalt glaze and exposed clay border and is surmounted by a sculptural finial with ribbed shell-like elements and small applied bead details. Paul Anthony founded Anthony Stoneware in 1966 with an emphasis upon functional pottery combining durability, thoughtful design and strong visual character. Working from western North Carolina, the pottery developed forms through traditional wheel-throwing and slab-construction methods, mixed its own glazes and fired its stoneware to approximately 2400 degrees. Carved and sculpted rims became a signature feature of the firm’s work, clearly represented by the ornamental flange, lid border and finial of this casserole. The substantial lidded form was designed as functional table and kitchen pottery, suitable for serving or storing food while also presenting attractively as a centerpiece or cabinet piece. Anthony Stoneware’s cobalt glaze was marketed as Royal Blue, one of the pottery’s established glaze colors
