Antique VICTORIAN WALNUT EASTLAKE HIP REST CHAIR

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Antique late Victorian walnut hip-rest chair with a tall open back, woven cane seat and warm reddish-brown finish. The frame has two shaped horizontal back slats, short angular hip rests, an oval seat rail, turned front legs and double front stretchers ornamented with repeated ring turnings. The shaped crest rail carries restrained incised decoration with geometric linework and a central fanlike device. That shallow, machine-cut ornament, together with the angular construction and turned components, reflects the Eastlake and American cottage-furniture influence popular during the closing decades of the 19th century. American Eastlake-style furniture commonly combined walnut construction, geometric incising, spindle or turned details and cane seating, particularly from approximately 1870 through 1890. The abbreviated arm supports are commonly called hip rests, providing limited lateral support while preserving the open proportions of a side chair. The wide, rounded seat and upright back made this form suitable for a parlor, bedroom or occasional seating arrangement. The visible grain, color and carved surfaces appear consistent with walnut, a wood frequently used for American Victorian and Eastlake-style seating. CONDITION REPORT > The chair retains the woven cane seat, though the cane suffers from a degree of distress with some broken and weakened strands, particularly around the perimeter and central seating area. Otherwise, a sturdy and rather well preserved example.
