AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Antique die-cut chromolithograph paper scrap custom framed under glass, measuring 8" × 9.75" overall. The humorous courtship scene depicts a formally dressed young couple embracing across a wooden garden gate while an older gentleman crouches behind the hedge, peering through spectacles as he secretly observes their meeting. The woman wears a fitted blue dress with a white apron-like front, while the gentleman appears in a pale suit and straw boater. The observer, dressed in striped trousers, red shirt and vest, introduces the comic narrative commonly found in late Victorian sentimental scraps and greeting-card imagery. The detailed chromolithography, closely die-cut figures, period dress and humorous courtship theme date the vignette to approximately 1880–1900. Die-cut chromolithograph scraps became widely popular during the late 19th century for scrap albums, greeting cards, decorative screens and household craftwork. Printed in multiple colors and cut closely around the figures, these small paper compositions often featured romantic couples, mischievous children, animals and humorous social episodes. The artwork is mounted against a dark olive-green ground and presented within a broad gold gilt-finished wood frame with stepped molding. The reverse retains a label from THE SNOOP SHOP ~ CUSTOM FRAMING ~ CENTREVILLE, MS., dated 10/86, documenting the framed presentation in October 1986. CONDITION REPORT > The paper artwork presents attractively beneath glass with strong color and clearly defined die-cut figures.
