AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Original oil painting on canvas by Alabama artist Susan K. Poole, presented in a striking custom burled-wood frame measuring 21.5" × 25.5" overall. The vertical composition centers upon a white rabbit seated upright and facing slightly left, wearing an oversized blue bow tied beneath the chin. Large tropical leaves, curling stems and warm earthen forms surround the figure, creating a lush garden setting that nearly fills the entire picture plane. The rabbit has been modeled through broad passages of ivory, lavender, pale blue, rose and soft gray rather than conventional white alone. Dark violet outlines define the ears, face and body, while loose, visible brushwork gives the fur and surrounding foliage a lively painted surface. The prominent bow introduces sweeping curves of cobalt, turquoise and slate blue, creating a strong focal contrast against the pale figure. This is a later 20th-century Southern regional Modernist painting, with Expressionist and Fauvist influence evident in the simplified forms, flattened space, visible brushwork and heightened color. Deep forest green, blue-green and purple foliage is balanced by coral, rust, ochre and golden-brown passages, producing a richly layered palette. Poole compresses foreground and background into overlapping shapes, allowing color, contour and rhythm to carry the composition rather than strict naturalistic depth. The subject combines portraitlike presentation with an imaginative storybook character. The rabbit’s upright posture, alert expression and extravagant bow give the figure a distinct personality, while the enveloping foliage creates an intimate, theatrical setting. Controlled asymmetry, energetic outlines and repeated leaf shapes guide the eye around the central figure and reinforce the decorative strength of the painting. Signed Susan K. Poole at the lower right. The broad custom frame has a richly figured burled-wood surface, dark reddish-brown finish, stepped molding and narrow gilt accents. The elaborate grain and restrained gold borders provide a strong architectural surround while complementing the painting’s saturated greens, blues and warm earth tones.
